What Presbyterians Believe
WHAT PRESBYTERIANS BELIEVE

Presbyterians are a group of Protestants whose church is founded on the concept of democratic rule under the Word of God. Presbyterian worship is simple and orderly. It revolves around hearing and learning from God's Word. Two sacraments are recognized: the Lord's Supper, which is usually celebrated monthly; and Baptism, which is administered to the infant children of church members as a sign of God's covenant of mercy, or to adults who have not been previously baptized.

All that is required to be a Presbyterian is to:

Presbyterians believe in God. They assert that:

God is Creator of the Universe

Christ is the incarnation of God on earth

The Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the world and in the believer

The Church is a universal company of Christ's followers

Forgiveness of sin is made possible by the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ

Life everlasting is shown by Christ's resurrection

The Bible is the most authoritative (though not literally infallible) source for faith and practice.

The two Sacraments as described in Scripture are Baptism, which unites us with Jesus Christ and makes us members of God's family, the Church; and Communion (Eucharist, the Lord's Supper) which is the real presence of Christ represented in the bread and cup, received in order to renew faith and to strengthen participants for the duties and privileges of Christian Service.

There is no strict set of beliefs which unites Presbyterians or separates them from other followers of Christ.

Presbyterians also use these Creeds and Confessions for inspiration and guidance:

According to the Book of Order, the meaning of membership is this:

"The incarnation of God in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives to the church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership. One becomes an active member of the church through faith in Christ Jesus as Savior and acceptance of his Lordship in all of life. Baptism and a public profession of faith in Jesus as Lord are the visible signs of entrance into the active membership of the church."

Persons may enter into active church membership in the following ways: by profession of faith, reaffirmation of faith in Jesus Christ, or transfer of certificate from some other church.

Most importantly, remember that Jesus loves you and wants to be in a relationship with you, as you are, where you are.
